店員:

はい、かしこまりました!どのようなことでしょうか?

(Yes, certainly! What would you like to know?)

アラヴィンド:

私は厳格なベジタリアンで、肉類に限らず、魚介類やかつお節の出汁も食べることができません。こちらの野菜カレーは出汁も植物性でしょうか?

(I am a strict vegetarian, and I cannot eat not only meats, but also seafood and bonito dashi. Is the soup stock in this vegetable curry also plant-based?)

店員:

確認してまいります。……お待たせいたしました。申し訳ございません、こちらのカレールーには豚肉の成分とチキンエキスが含まれております。

同僚(鈴木):

アラヴィンド:

お疲れ様です!今日は在宅勤務だったので、自転車で近所のカフェに行ってサラダプレートを食べました。

(Good job! Since I was working from home today, I rode my bike to a nearby cafe and had a salad plate.)

同僚(鈴木):

いいね!やっぱり日本でベジタリアンのお店探すのって大変?

(Nice! Is it still tough to find vegetarian shops in Japan?)

アラヴィンド:

そうですね、日本の料理は見た目に肉がなくても出汁に魚や肉が使われていることが多いです。外食の難しさは、出汁文化の違いによるものにほかなりませんね。

(Yes, Japanese cuisine often uses fish or meat in the dashi even if there’s no visible meat. The difficulty of dining out is nothing other than due to differences in dashi culture.)

同僚(鈴木):
