Reading Comprehension (1 item)

Singapore’s “30 by 30” and Singapore-Japan Food Tech Cooperation

Singapore relies on imports for more than 90% of the food it consumes.

Disruptions in supply chains caused by global conflicts or pandemics are serious risks to the country’s food security.

Under this sense of crisis, the government has set a national goal of “30 by 30,” which aims to raise the food self-sufficiency rate to 30% by 2030.

Even though they aim to increase food production capacity, converting limited land into agricultural use is not easy.

However, precisely because such constraints exist, research on “urban agriculture,” which efficiently grows vegetables in narrow spaces, and “alternative meat” using biotechnology, is rapidly developing.

In particular, the entrepreneurial environment in Singapore, which took the lead globally in granting regulatory approval for the sale of “cultured meat” grown from cells to make real meat, has become a gathering place for cutting-edge global technologies.

In the development of this field, the role played by Japan’s technological capabilities is by no means small.

When it comes to the control technology of plant factories that adjusts light intensity and temperature by millimeter increments, the know-how accumulated by Japanese companies is remarkable.

Of course, just because superior technology is introduced, it does not mean that all problems will be automatically resolved.

At the same time, establishing low-cost operations tailored to local needs, developing legal rules, and conducting educational activities to have average consumers accept food tech are required.

However, if companies and universities of both countries deepen their cross-border cooperation, groundbreaking innovations that can contribute to solving food problems faced by all of Asia and, by extension, the entire world will undoubtedly emerge.
